And it appears they’re starting with New World.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. ![]() Whether this propels them to start figuring out how to successfully make other games in other genres and become a real studio to be reckoned with is another thing entirely, but you have to start somewhere. Regardless, New World looks to break Amazon’s cursed streak of failed releases, provided nothing disastrous happens with the final product. Some players have raised concerns about the game potentially being pay-to-win, based on what’s offered in the store, but it’s not clear how that will unfold in the final product. That has long been a staple of the most successful games in the genre, but instead, this is more going the live service route, where there is no sub fee, only an initial up front payment, and then microtransactions within the game. It also has a leg up on competitors like World of Warcraft and even the surging Final Fantasy XIV, given that unlike those games, this is an MMO without a subscription model. It’s an unlikely potential hit, given how hard it is to launch an MMO, much less one based on a brand new IP, but it’s gotten a lot right, and as such, seems destined like it may indeed be Amazon’s first coherent and potentially successful release. New World has routinely been on top of the Twitch charts all throughout the beta, and not even just when some of the biggest streamers are online. It has made converts of longtime MMO icons like Asmongold, and I’ve seen all manner of players from different games play the beta and talk about their plans to play the game non-stop when it launches. New World is currently in a beta period that has indicated the game has a lot of promise. ![]()
